On 1 February 2022 Stena Line opened up a brand new route – Nynäshamn-Hanko. The ferry Urd, which previously coursed between Liepaja and Travemünde, left the port in Nynäshamn and departed for Finland, as reported by Stena Line.
Initially Urd ferry will run this route three times a week, but as soon as its sister ferry Stena Gothica joins it, ferries will start run between Nynäshamn and Hanko every day.
«By sending Urd to Finland, we are filling a gap in the transport network. The new route was created through a dialogue with our customers and analysis of market demand. To make the new route successful, we need bravery, hard work, a passionate team and a strong commitment. The feedback so far has been very positive, which indicates we have made the correct decision,» says Stena Line Trade Director in the Baltic Sea Nordic Region Johan Edelman.
The company adds that the new route marks the next step for Stena Line’s efforts to expand and reinforce positions in the Baltic Sea. In recent months Stena Line has invested considerable resources into the fleet coursing from Latvia to Germany and Sweden, as well as the ships coursing between Poland and Sweden.
«By expanding to Finland, Stena Line is able to further improve and expand the most complete, efficient and integrated ferry network in Northern Europe.»
Edelman says: «It is a direct, transportation-based project. Its goal is forming a floating bridge between Middle-Sweden and the south of Finland. The Nynäshamn-Hanko route has reliable vessels and solution-focused crew manning them. The ferry inauguration ceremony was a celebration-worthy event. However, we are already back to work, further stabilising traffic and implementing our growth plans.»
The first ferry departed for the Finnish sea port of Hanko at night on 1 February. The way there will take 12 hours.
Nynäshamn-Hanko is the first Stena Line route that links Sweden with continental Finland.
«Stena Line’s success in opening a new route from Sweden’s Norvik Port proves how much the newly-constructed port is important to ensure sustainable delivery of goods to Sweden’s largest consumer region. The port has stable multimodal connections with the rest of Sweden with roads and railway, and it is the closest to shipping routes than other Swedish ports located on the eastern shore,» says the board chairman of Stockholm port Fredrik Lindstal.
The focus on freight transports satisfies all of Stena Line freight customers’ needs, whether these are traditional escorted and unescorted freight, containers, special cargo or intermodal units that arrive carried by railway.
