SPKC offers advise for a healthy and safe Easter

In preparation for the upcoming holiday the Latvian Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (SPKC) offers advice to make healthy meals and to make the holiday safe.
Easter is usually characterised with eating eggs and meals containing eggs. This is why it is important to keep in mind the quality of eggs, their proper storage and preparation, SPKC reminds.
The centra also notes that before purchasing eggs, residents should check if they aren’t expired or cracked. “Eggs can be kept both in a refrigerator or outside – under room temperature. However, this temperature needs to be stable, as temperature variations can cause problems for eggs. Nevertheless, it is recommended to keep eggs refrigerated.”

To avoid infections diseases, residents should take precautions – avoid consuming raw eggs.

When boiling eggs, immerse them completely in water. Eat egg-based foods immediately after cooking. Always wash hands, dishes, and work surfaces thoroughly after coming into contact with raw eggs. Wash hands and kitchen equipment between contact with raw food and foods that are not intended to be heat treated.
SPKC specialists stress that inappropriately prepared and stored eggs can cause various intestinal infections, especially salmonella infection.
It is also important to follow other precautions to avoid various intestinal infections:
wash your hands thoroughly before eating, after visiting public places and the toilet, preparing food, and in contact with pets. Make sure that children also wash their hands thoroughly and frequently. In keeping with the tradition of looking for hidden eggs in the garden, remember to wash “found” eggs before use to avoid unwanted bacteria and viruses entering the body when peeling and eating eggs.
SPKC specialists also remind – ticks are already active. This means that if residents plan to spend time outside, they should pick a clear spot or clear it on their own – especially old leaves and fallen branches. When spending time outside, residents should always be cautious and use tick and other insect repellents. Clothes should be the kind that prevent insects from crawling under it. After coming home, it is a good idea to check clothes – especially children’s clothes – for insects and ticks.
Make sure to provide a healthy festive table. More fresh fruits, berries and vegetables, microgreens, etc. on the table. Wholegrain and lower-fat dairy products are welcome as well. If you choose to add salt to your food, choose iodized salt. Instead of carbonated and sweetened drinks – prepare water with additives (citrus, mint, cucumber, berries, etc.), continues SPKC.
SPKC invites residents to spend the holiday healthy and not to consume alcoholic beverages. “If you have consumed alcoholic beverages, under no circumstances should you drive a vehicle, and we encourage your companions not to be indifferent if you see that someone is planning to participate in road traffic under the influence of alcohol or drugs,” experts remind.
