The US has reportedly deployed tactical nuclear weapons to Britain for the first time in 17 years, marking a turning point in NATO’s stance on nuclear weapons in Europe, writes United24 Media.
The weapons that arrived at the United Kingdom RAF base in Lakenheath, Suffolk, are believed to be B61-12 thermonuclear bombs. They were delivered on the 21st of July from a US Air Force base in New Mexico. Although the US Department of Defense has not officially confirmed the transfer of weapons, and the British Ministry of Defense is not commenting on the situation,
several sources indicate that the transfer of weapons has taken place.
The US nuclear weapons were located at the Lakenheath base during the Cold War, and the last of them were removed in 2008, when Europe worked together on a disarmament plan. The base is currently undergoing infrastructure improvements, which were first mentioned in the US 2022 budget documents. They mention construction projects related to nuclear mission requirements.
