Snow and ice on roads have made driving conditions very complicated on main and regional roads all across Latvia, as reported by Latvian State Roads (LVC).
Sections of roads that are snowed and iced over are being cleared and coated with anti-slip substance. To improve driving conditions, LVC has deployed 133 snow-clearing vehicles.
Currently driving conditions are complicated on the following roads: Tallinn motorway (A1), Vidzeme motorway (A2), Valmiera motorway (A3), Riga bypasses A4 and A5, Daugavpils motorway (A6), Bauska motorway (A7), Jelgava motorway (A8), Liepaja motorway (A11), Rezekne motorway (A12), the road leading to the Russian border (Grebneva)-Rezekne-Daugavpils-Lithuanian border (Medumi) (A13), Daugavpils bypass (A14), Rezekne bypass (A15) and Tīnūži-Koknese road (P80).
Driving conditions are also complicated on regional roads all over Latvia.
During winter there can be both snow and ice on roads. When it snows, the layer of snow on main roads may reach 6 cm (up to 10 cm on less busy asphalt roads). No matter how hard the road maintenance company tries, there is no way to prevent winter, the company stresses.
LVC stresses motorists should be especially careful now, choose and appropriate driving speed and maintain a safe distance from other road traffic participants.
