The initiative portal manabalss.lv has started collecting signatures for members of the Latvia’s Saeima to have higher education as a mandatory education level, according to the information published on the portal.
It is written in the initiative that there are 1,832 candidates running for the 14th Saeima, of which 34 have elementary education, and 432 have secondary education. 58 of them are unemployed, but several dozen indicated that their profession as janitor, driver, cook and beautician.
The Authors Of The Initiative Emphasize That Latvia’s Legislation Does Not Determine The compulsory Level Of Education Or Professional Knowledge That A Candidate For The Post Of Member Of The Saeima Should Have.
«Also, candidates’ knowledge of national legislation and the work of the Saeima is not tested. Therefore, persons who lack understanding of the work of a member of the Saiema and its importance can not take this post» as written in the initiative’s application.
The work at the Saeima requires high qualifications, and memebers of Saiema must be specialists with the knowledge of how to contribute to country’s prosperity in a structured way. Tthe authors of the initiative believe that there must be a certain minimum level of education that allows to run for the Saeima elections.
The authors of the initiative invite you to sign for amendment to Chapter 1, Article 5 of the Saeima Election Law that should be supplemented with the clause stating «Candidates cannot apply for the Saeima elections and persons without (at least) Bacehlor’s degree cannot be elected to the Saeima»
«A society that elects its representatives once every four years must be sure that the elected members and professionals have appropriate education level,» the authors of the initiative epmhasizes.
