Shocking Eurostat data on gas prices in Latvia and neighbouring countries

European Union’s (EU) Eurostat bureau’s compiled information regarding energy resource price changes – comparing the first half of this year to the same period of 2022 – shows that Latvia is an absolute record holder when it comes to gas price rise (+139%).
And this is purely and only gas consumption in households! Romania is slightly behind Latvia with gas price growth of +134%. Austria holds the “bronze medal” with its gas price growth (+103%). Holland is fourth with 99% gas price growth.
What’s even worse for Latvia is that the country’s closest neighbours are in the opposite half of the list. In Estonia gas prices experienced a 0.6% drop when compared to the same period of 2022, whereas in Lithuania the price remained unchanged. In Sweden the price of gas went up 7% and in Denmark it went up by 10%. No data is available for Finland.

Gas prices went down in Italy and Croatia as well – a by 0.5% in both countries.

The price of electricity consumed by households went up by +74% in Latvia and +88% in Lithuania. In Estonia it went up by only 5% in the first six months of 2023!
In Sweden electricity price went up by 27%, in Finland it went up by 23% and in Denmark it went down by 16%!
High electricity price growth was observed in Romania (+77%), whereas a very low drop was observed in Spain (-41%). For Holland Eurostat has calculated a -953% high electricity price growth!

The report mentions that electricity in the first six months of 2023 was the cheapest in Bulgaria, where it cost 11.40 EUR/100 kWH, and was the most expensive in Holland, where it cost 47.50 EUR/100 kWH.
When it comes to gas, it was the cheapest for Hungarian households (3.40 EUR/100 kWH) and the most expensive in Holland (24.80 EUR/kWH).
