Several espionage cases in Latvia: State Security Service provides latest updates

The State Security Service (VDD) has so far publicly reported on 32 individuals detained since 2016 on suspicion of espionage or other activities threatening national security on behalf of Russia or Belarus.

Currently, the VDD is handling four criminal cases initiated on suspicion of espionage in the interests of Russia.

Additionally, the VDD is processing seven criminal cases initiated on suspicion of providing other forms of assistance to a foreign country in activities directed against Latvia.

According to information obtained during the investigation, all individuals involved in the criminal activities are suspected of acting in Russia’s interests.

In the interest of the investigation, the VDD is not providing further comments at this time.

The Criminal Law of Latvia stipulates a maximum penalty of up to 20 years’ imprisonment and confiscation of property for espionage. The same maximum penalty applies for providing assistance to a foreign country in actions against Latvia.

As previously reported by LETA, the most high-profile case involves former Saeima deputy Jānis Ādamsons. In the first instance, the former parliamentarian was sentenced to eight years and six months in prison for spying for Russia. The case is currently under appeal.
