Today, on the 11th of March, the Saeima’s Public Administration and Local Government Committee supported a proposal to draft amendments to the Law on State Secrets, which would require members of the Central Election Commission (CVK) to obtain security clearance.
The committee made this decision despite objections from the State Security Service and the Constitution Protection Bureau.
Representatives of the security services expressed their opposition to the proposal,
arguing that the need to access classified information is rare and that such access could be limited to the CVK chairperson. From a practical standpoint, security agencies see no justification for requiring all CVK members to obtain security clearance.
Currently, information used for official purposes is classified, but all CVK members can access it without requiring security clearance.
During the committee meeting, MP Ingmārs Līdaka (AS) urged his fellow deputies not to complicate the matter and to reject the proposal. However, the majority of deputies decided that the draft amendments to the Law on State Secrets should be developed and submitted to the committee by the 1st of April.
