On Tuesday, the 14th of March, Riga City Court in Pārdaugava sentenced 14th Saeima deputy Glorija Grevcova, who is accused of lying to the Central Election Commission, to 160 hours of community service.
Prosecutor Edijs Pastars previously asked the court to sentence her to 200 hours of community service and a fine of EUR 6 200. Grevcova asked for acquittal, saying that her guilt was not proven in the end. She also said the information that was provided to CVK for multiple of her colleagues was changed and the prosecutor was informed of this, but he ignored her words.
The prosecutor mentioned during court debates that Grevcova was aware that her information form was submitted to CVK. There is also no evidence to suggest Grevcova had provided her colleagues with actual information about her education and work experience and that the error is a result of mistakenly entered data. Grevcova also signed the application containing erroneous data. With all this, it would be absurd to give Grevcova an acquittal simply because she may not have read the form submitted to CVK.
The prosecutor said that
Grevcova also lied about her work experience on draugiem.lv social network.
He stressed the profile created in 2006 with Grevcova’s name and maiden surname mentioned she has higher education and a rather wide work experience. Pastars said there is no reason to believe this profile was created to defame Grevcova, because it was created a long time ago. On top of that, the wallet of the profile received money from Grevcova’s bank account between 2015 and 2018.
Grevcova’s defence attorney said the facts that have no link to the charges cannot be used in court, adding that the fact they are being used partially indicates the prosecution is unsure there is enough evidence. Grevcova claimed having no access to this profile and that she has not used it for a long time.
The crime Grevcova is accused of is punishable with short-term deprivation of freedom from 15 days to three months, 40 to 280 hours of community service or a fine worth up to 100 minimal wage amounts in Latvia.
