“Our objective is making sure locally made goods are available on shelves of local chain stores,” said chairperson of Saeima’s Economic, Agricultural, Environmental and Regional Policy Committee Linda Matisone during the meeting of 19th of April.
“The volume of locally produced agricultural products on shelves of chain stores should be doubled at least, and this needs to be done in the shortest possible amount of time in order to support producers and warm Latvia’s economy,” Saeima’s press-service cites Matisone’s words.
Compared with neighbouring countries, various stores in Latvia have a low percentage of locally produced products,
deputies said, stressing the need to increase the amount and assortment of locally made products in supermarkets and other stores. Members of the committee also stressed the need to find a constructive solution to help support the local market and local producers.
Representatives of producers and merchants told Saeima deputies that often it is difficult for local producers to get their goods on shelves.
Members of the committee decided to ask the Ministry of Agriculture to develop proposals to help increase the proportion of locally produced food and agricultural products on shelves of Latvian stores by the 31st of May.
