On Wednesday, the 5th of February, members of the Saeima Budget and Finance Committee approved Mārtiņš Kazāks for the post of President of the Bank of Latvia once again.
During the committee’s meeting, questions associated with Kazāks as the future head of the central bank were discussed quickly. The same committee had previously evaluated Kazāks for the post.
Members of the Saeima plan to vote on Kazāks on Thursday, the 6th of February.
Kazāks is the sole candidate for the post of President of the Bank of Latvia. He was initially proposed for the post by the Combined List and National Alliance and was later picked up by New Unity and Progressives.
Before they landed on Kazāks, the ruling coalition had agreed on Vice-President of the Bank of Latvia Santa Purgaile as the main candidate for the post.
However, Purgaile did not receive support from the Union of Greens and Farmers. After learning of this, Purgaile withdrew from the race. Immediately after that, New Unity and Progressives, without any alternative candidates left, decided to support Kazāks.
