Sabotage, border fence and migration — Latvia’s minister on key security challenges

Possible acts of sabotage currently pose the greatest threats in the field of internal security, Interior Minister Rihards Kozlovskis (New Unity) said this morning in an interview on Latvian Television’s program Rīta panorāma.

The minister noted that this year in Latvia will largely unfold under the sign of elections and pre-election activities, which will inevitably create a certain level of tension, making it important for all involved to maintain common sense.

Speaking about the fence along Latvia’s eastern border, Kozlovskis reminded that it is essentially completed, though work still remains to finish patrol paths and to continue implementing additional engineering solutions.

He acknowledged that the fence is frequently damaged

— last year alone, more than 200 such incidents were recorded. Such damage often occurs with the support of Belarusian authorities, the minister said.

Kozlovskis added that during the winter months the pressure of illegal migration orchestrated by Belarus along Latvia’s eastern border has somewhat eased, but it is still too early to speak of any long-term changes.
