Russian poet Aleksandr Pushkin’s statue removed from Kronvalds Park in Riga

Riga City Council reports that on the 30th of May Riga Monuments Agency moved the statue of Russian poet Aleksandr Pushkin was moved to a warehouse in order to later hand it over to Latvian Artists’ Union Museum.
A conceptual agreement has been reached with the museum on the storage and exhibition of the statue. This decision was made due to the fact that in 2009 this statue was installed in Kronvals Park without coordinating the act with Riga’s Historic Centre Preservation and Development Council and the National Cultural Monuments Protection Inspectorate.

The statue was installed in the park in violation of existing regulations.

On the 3rd of March 2023 Riga City Council Monuments Council issued a recommendation to move the statue to a “more appropriate place”.
Latvian Artists’ Union Museum will take over the statue once the formal agreement has been completed.
