Russian independent channel TV Rain permitted to continue operating from Riga

On Monday, 6 June, Latvian National Electronic Mass Media Council (NEPLP) decided to issue a broadcasting permit for so-called Russian independent television Дождь (TV Rain). This means this television channel will broadcast its content from Riga, as reported by NEPLP chairman Ivars Āboliņš.
Following the closure of this channel in Russia, its editor in chief Tihon Dzyadko and multiple other editors left the country.

Дождь/TV Rain will be included on the list of TV channels registered in Latvia from 9 June onward.

Āboliņš said talks regarding broadcasts of this TV channel from Latvia’s territory lasted about three months.

Multiple media-related entrepreneurs participated in talks regarding allowing this television to channels to broadcast its content from Riga.
As previously reported, since the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February, Russian authorities have executed tight repressions on already repressed media outlets.
Russian authorities declare any information in which its forces are accused of various war crimes in Ukraine as fake news.

After shutting down its office in Russia, German Deutsche Welle and a number of other Russian independent media moved to Riga.
