In Ukraine, the Russian occupation forces have seized Europe’s largest nuclear power plant after shelling it and starting a dangerous fire that has been extinguished, British public broadcaster BBC reports.
On the night to Friday, February 4, a fire broke out at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant in south-central Ukraine and Kyiv stated it was shelled by Russian troops. Ukrainian energy authorities say the facility was now safe and radiation levels were normal. World leaders have accused Russia of endangering the safety of an entire continent, and Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Russia of «nuclear terror».

US President Joe Biden called on Moscow to stop its military activities around the site, while Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said the «horrific attacks» from Russia «must cease immediately». British Prime Minister Boris Johnson evaluated that attack could «directly threaten the safety of all of Europe». All three leaders spoke to Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky by phone.
Russia’s Defence Ministry, in turn, blamed the attack on Ukrainian forces, calling it a «monstrous provocation» without providing evidence, BBC reports.
