The scenario of Russia attacking NATO in the medium term cannot be excluded, said Director of NATO Strategic Communications Centre of Excellence Jānis Sārts in an interview to TV3 programme 900 seconds.
NATO is preparing for a possibility of Russia attacking, and preparations are meant as a deterrence mechanism. “We have to admit the situation in Ukraine is not as great as we would have wanted. Supplies of arms from the west are insufficient, and there are elections coming up around the world. This creates political uncertainty, so it’s also not possible to exclude negative scenarios in the medium term,” said the Latvian expert, stressing that these scenarios are unavoidable.
Sārts explained that Russian information operations continue. Their goal is hitting on people’s emotions and creating a sense of doom and attempt to convince people Ukraine will lose and that the west and Baltic States are next. The response to such information operations should be very rational – countries have to prepare if the worst possible scenarios are realised. At the same time, countries have to work to ensure this never happens.
“If Ukraine wins the war, none of the bad scenarios will come to pass,” said the director of NATO Strategic Communications Centre of Excellence.
