Russian authorities have given British diplomat Danae Dholakia two weeks to leave the country and have accused her of espionage, reports Politico.
The Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement published on the morning of the 15th of Januarythat it would not tolerate the activities of British intelligence officers on Russian territory. Dholakia, a British diplomat in Moscow, was summoned to the Foreign Ministry, where she was warned to leave the country. Moscow said it would continue to take an uncompromising approach to the country’s interests.
The Russians have also warned London not to take any actions that could escalate the situation, threatening to respond with appropriate action.
A British Foreign Office spokesman said the British were currently carefully weighing their response, and noted that this was not the first time the Kremlin had made malicious and unfounded insults to embassy staff. He added that insulting British diplomats is a desperate move on Moscow’s part and threatens the basic requirements for the work of diplomatic missions.
