Belgorod, where about 370 thousand people live, is located about 40 kilometers from the borders of Ukraine. It is north of Ukraine’s second-largest city, Kharkiv, and since Moscow invaded last February, residents have been in constant fear of possible shelling. It is customary for fighters to pass over Belgorod to fly onward to Ukraine.
