On Thursday, the 6th of February, Latvian State Security Service (VDD) spoke with the leader of “For Stability!”, Saeima deputy Aleksejs Rosļikovs about his recent public statements the institution believes were aimed against Latvians, the service reports.
During this conversation, VDD accepted Rosļikovs’ explanations for the reasoning behind his statements and objectives.
He was also warned of the liability in the event of incitement to national hatred or other criminal offences.
The service does not provide further comments, but, as the archive of the agency LETA shows, it is common practice for the special service to call representatives of various fields for a discussion about their public statements or potential actions. For example, last December, the VDD held a discussion with Natālija Ābola, a deputy of the Riga City Council (GKR), about her statements on the social networks. Discussions with the leaders of the Latvian Russians Union were conducted in the past.
According to the law, VDD has the right, within its competence, to summon to the state security institution any person in connection with the verification of information, as well as with the cases and materials the examination of which falls within the competence of the state security institution.
The service also has the right, if the person has shown signs of illegal activity, to issue a warning to the person.
The service also has the right, according to its competence, to require persons to stop violations of the law and other actions that interfere with the exercise of the powers of officials of the state security institution, as well as to use the coercive measures provided for against offenders.
