Rinkēvičs: Russian drone attack on Poland also affects Latvia

The drones shot down in Poland confirm that Russia’s aggression against Ukraine directly affects us, and “appropriate measures must be taken,” Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs stated on social media.

He expressed full support and solidarity with Poland regarding the incursion of Russian drones into Polish airspace. “Allies are working and must continue to work together,” Rinkēvičs wrote.

Meanwhile, Commander of the National Armed Forces Kaspars Pudāns emphasized that Latvia’s eastern regions are under constant guard by air defense units, ready to identify and shoot down Russian drones should they enter Latvian airspace. He noted that the events in Poland last night prove cooperation protocols with NATO air policing mission fighters are effective.

As reported, Polish armed forces overnight shot down targets that had violated the country’s air border, Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced.

“An operation is underway related to multiple violations of Poland’s airspace.

The army has used weapons against these objects. I am in constant contact with the president and the defense minister. I received a report directly from the operation commander,” Tusk stated on platform X.

Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz said Wednesday that aircraft mobilized in response to repeated airspace violations during Russia’s attacks on Ukraine had opened fire on “hostile objects.”

“The aircraft used weapons against hostile objects,” he confirmed on social media, adding: “We are in continuous contact with NATO leadership.”

Ukrainian monitoring channels earlier reported that several Russian drones had entered Poland through western Ukraine.

Polish armed forces said that together with NATO allies they scrambled aircraft and placed ground-based air defense units on full alert.
