Due to changes in the number of pupils, several preschool institutions and schools in Riga will have to be closed, Riga Mayor Viesturs Kleinbergs (Progressives) acknowledged on Wednesday in an interview on LTV’s Rīta panorāma.
The mayor did not name the specific educational institutions that may be closed, saying that the main outlines of the changes should become clear by the end of the week, while a decision could be taken within two weeks.
Kleinbergs explained that in Riga there are neighbourhoods where there is a shortage of kindergarten places, while in other areas institutions are operating at only 50% to 60% of their capacity.
The politician promised that if an educational institution is closed and a child has to change schools or kindergartens, conditions at the new institution will be the same or better than at the one being closed.
