Riga City Council will not discuss suggestion from nationalists to rename Pushkin Lyceum

Riga City Council’s Education, Culture and Sports Committee did not discuss the suggestion from the National Alliance and Latvian Association of Regions political parties to rename the Pushkin Lyceum into Sarkandaugavas Lyceum.
This topic was taken off the committee’s agenda.

Deputies decided to postpone discussion of this topic in order to discuss it with representatives of the education institution first.

According to the leader of the NA/LRA Riga City Council faction Einārs Cilinskis, having Pushkin’s name as part of the name of the education institution is unacceptable. He said it needs to be changed as soon as possible to prevent residents and the rest of the world “getting the wrong impression”.
“There is no room for discussion, because it marks an empire’s territory just like a monument. We have to put an end to it, and it has nothing to do with how we view Pushkin’s work. Because every individual can decide, but on a national level we need to have a single position,” said Cilinskis.
NA/LRA Riga City Council faction proposes renaming the education institution into Sarkandaugavas Lyceum because of its location – the lyceum is located on Sarkandaugavas Street 22.
