Retail trade turnover in Latvia up 4.2% in May

Compared to May 2021, total retail trade turnover increased by 4.2 % in May 2022.
Turnover of retail trade in food products grew by 2.9%. Retail trade in non-food products (except for retail sale of automotive fuel) increased by 7.8%, but turnover of retail sale of automotive fuel – reduced by 2.6%.
As compared to May 2021, the most significant turnover growth was registered in retail sale of clothing, footwear and leather goods (of 65.2%), retail sale of pharmaceutical and medical goods (8.9%) and retail sale of cultural and recreation goods (8.2%). A turnover drop was registered in retail sale in stalls or markets (of 16.1%), retail sale via mail order houses or via Internet (7.3%) and retail sale of information and communication equipment in specialised stores (2.4%). In May 2021 there were significant trade restrictions in large shopping centres.

Total retail trade turnover at current prices increased by 23.6% (not taking into account the calendar influence), according to calendar adjusted data (at constant prices) compiled by the Central Statistical Bureau of Latvia.

Compared to April, the total turnover of retail trade enterprises in May 2022 fell by 1.1%, according to seasonally adjusted data at constant prices. Turnover of retail trade in food products declined by 1.0%. Retail trade in non-food products (except for retail sale of automotive fuel) reduced by 1.5%, but turnover of retail sale of automotive fuel – increased by 0.2%.
As compared to the previous month, the most notable turnover growth was in non-specialised stores selling mainly non-food products (of 3.9%) and retail sale of clothing, footwear and leather goods (2.2%). The largest turnover drop was registered in retail sale of cultural and recreation goods (of 16.7%), retail sale of cosmetics and toiletries (6.3%) and retail sale in stalls or markets (4.9%).

Compared to April, the total retail trade turnover at current prices without taking into account seasonality has increased by 7.1% in May 2022.
