In Hungary, the level of corruption in the public sector has reached record highs, and it is much more widespread than in other European Union countries, writes Politico.
Transparency International’s latest report shows that Hungary, Bulgaria, and Romania are far behind the top three with 42 to 46 points out of the maximum hundred. The lowest level of corruption is in the Scandinavian countries: Denmark is in first place with 90 points, while Finland earned 87 points and Sweden – 83 points.
Denmark and Finland are also leaders in the global Corruption Perceptions Index, along with New Zealand (87 points). Syria and South Sudan (13 points) and Somalia (12 points) are at the bottom of the Corruption Perceptions index.
Ireland is the only country in the European Union that has strengthened the fight against corruption and moved higher in the Corruption Perceptions Index.
Moldova, which has been a candidate country for the European Union since June 2022, has also improved its performance.
Russia has one of the lowest indicators in Eastern Europe, 28 points. Ukraine is only slightly higher, but it has been carrying out crucial reforms since the beginning of the war and is steadily improving its performance. However, war has not totally ended the movement of corrupt operatives in Ukraine, as illustrated by the recent resignation of Ukraine’s deputy defense minister.
