It is planned to spend EUR 300 000 on the removal of the Memorial to Red Army Troops at Slavas Square and the monument to Soldiers of the Red Army 360th Rifle Division on 18th November Street in Daugavpils, said Daugavpils municipality’s executive director Sabīne Šņepste at a press-conference.
The municipality has until 15 November to remove these monuments even though Daugavpils Municipal Council has decided to take this issue to the Constitutional Court.
As previously reported, Latvia’s government previously approved a list of 69 monuments, memorials and plaques that glorify Soviet and Nazi regimes that are to be removed from Latvia’s territory.
National Cultural Heritage Board, Latvian Artists’ Union and Museum of the Occupation of Latvia evaluated the list of all objects that could potentially fall in the category of objects to be removed from Latvia’s territory decided a total of 69 of them are to be disposed of in Latvia.
This topic became hot in Latvia after the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on 24 February.
Mayor of Riga Mārtiņš Staķis previously said removal of the monument in Victory Park may cost approximately EUR 2-3 million. The head of the municipality also stressed that dismantling should commence in summer to make it on time to the deadline – 15 November.
