On the night to Thursday, the 12th of December, Latvia’s State Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre announced a red level warning in Jekabpils due to very high water levels in Daugava River.
This night water level in Daugava River in Jekabpils was 7.66 m above the zero level. This is 1.5 m higher than the day prior and 4 m higher than it was on the 1st of January.
Hydrologists predict the water level in Daugava River in Jekabpils is close to or has already exceeded the red level warning threshold – 8.4 m above the local monitoring station’s zero point. Ice continues moving and piling up in Daugava River in Jekabpils. New masses keep coming from upriver, blocking the river and causing more territories to flood.
Red level warning means there is a high risk of increased damage to surrounding area and high risks for human lives. Residents have to act – be prepared for emergency measures and evacuation. Services urge residents to follow information and recommendations from local institutions.
Red level warning is announced in Jekabpils until Friday, the 13th of January, for now.
Near Zeļķu Bridge the water level has gone down slightly in the last 24 hours. Radio1.lv portal reports that late in the evening on Wednesday Jekavpils municipality’s Civil Protection Committee convened for an emergency meeting. Jekabpils Mayor Raivis Ragainis reports Skaubīša Street and Dārzu Street are two of the most critical locations in the city – water is accumulating there. Three mobile pumps are deployed there to pump out the water. Outside the city the situation is the most critical in Gravāni and Sakas Island.
