A record large number of state paid sick leave certificates were issued in Latvia in December 2021 – nearly 72 000. More than 11 000 of them were related to Covid-19 diagnosis, as reported by LTV programme Panorāma.
With reference to data from the State Social Insurance Agency (VSAA), LTV reports that the number of state-paid sick leave certificates issued in December was 38% larger when compared to the same month of 2020.
VSAA representative Iveta Daine told LTV it is hard to say what the reason was for the issue of those sick leave certificates.
«It is hard to say – either those are mothers who remained at home with children or there were other reasons. We have to conclude that if this is about Covid-19 infections, we can see five cases when the infection period lasted for a whole year,» explained VSAA representative.
At the same time, it is expected January’s data to turn out even more dramatic, considering the rapid spread of Omicron variant.
