Rapid weather change: wet snow, frost, and strong wind gusts

On Thursday, the weather will be overcast, with precipitation expected overnight in some areas, mainly in the western and central regions. During the day, rain will spread across most of the country, with wet snow in some places, according to the Latvian Environment, Geology, and Meteorology Center.

Light winds will allow fog to form in certain areas overnight, while by day, the north wind will gradually intensify, reaching gusts of up to 14 m/s along the coast. Night temperatures will drop to between -2°C and +3°C, while during the day, the maximum temperature will range from +2°C to +7°C across most of the country, with temperatures in the southeast reaching +10°C to +12°C.

On Friday night, a large precipitation zone will continue to affect the country, bringing prolonged rain and snow, particularly in the eastern regions, and winds will become gustier.

As the precipitation will be persistent, at times even heavy, and colder air will flow in, up to 5cm of snow may accumulate. With temperatures remaining relatively low, the snow cover in eastern Latvia may last into the beginning of the following week. Once the precipitation stops, the skies will gradually clear, and the sun will shine. Friday night temperatures will range from -2°C to +1°C, with daytime temperatures not exceeding -1°C to +3°C.

The Latvian Environment, Geology, and Meteorology Center warns drivers to be prepared for challenging road conditions on Thursday evening and Friday, as visibility will be reduced during precipitation, and some road sections will be slippery and snow-covered.

During the weekend, as atmospheric pressure rises, the weather will become drier and sunnier, although cloud cover will increase again on Sunday afternoon. Nighttime temperatures will continue to decrease. Frost is expected nationwide on both Saturday and Sunday nights, with temperatures potentially dropping close to -10°C in some areas, while daytime highs will range from +2°C to +8°C.

Next week, the first half of the week will see frosty nights and relatively cool days, with gusty winds making the temperatures feel even lower. Later in the week, daytime temperatures will gradually rise again, surpassing +10°C, although frost will still persist at night. The wind will weaken, and precipitation will generally decrease, leading to calmer weather overall.
