In a telephone conversation, Russian President Vladimir Putin informed Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi that he will not be attending the G20 summit hosted by India in the capital city of Delhi on the 9th to 10th of September this year, as reported by India on Monday, the 28th of August, writes BBC.
India issued a statement expressing understanding for Russia’s decision as President Putin won’t attend the G20 summit in Delhi. Instead,
Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will be representing Russia.
During the phone call, the leaders also discussed regional and global matters, including positive Russia-India relations under their strategic partnership.
Putin’s recent BRICS summit participation via video link aimed to avoid an International Criminal Court’s (ICC) arrest warrant, which is issued against Putin alleging his involvement in war crimes in Ukraine.
The upcoming G20 summit in Delhi is expected to address Russia’s Ukraine invasion,
with world leaders like US President Joe Biden and UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak in attendance.
The G20 consists of the world’s wealthiest 19 countries along with EU. Presently, India holds the G20 Presidency.
