Russian President Vladimir Putin said Russia is “ready” for a nuclear war with the West, making his latest comments in an interview with Russian state media published on Wednesday, the 13th of March, a week ahead of Russia’s presidential “election”, which he is guaranteed to win to secure a fifth term, reports Politico.
“From a military-technical point of view, of course we are ready,” Putin was quoted as saying when asked if Russia was ready for nuclear war. “We have them with us all the time, constantly in a state of combat readiness.”
Putin also warned on Wednesday that the presence of American troops on Russian or Ukrainian territory would be seen as escalation and “we will treat it as such”, although he added that he did not think this would happen.
Last month, French President Emmanuel Macron caused a stir among his Western allies when he refused to rule out sending Western troops to Ukraine, an idea that US President Joe Biden categorically rejected.
Last year, Putin cancelled ratification of the 1996 Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) and on Wednesday reiterated that Russia would consider resuming nuclear tests if the US did so.
“If they carry out such tests, I do not rule it out,” he was quoted as saying.
