Provision of military support to Ukraine was historically a unique situation, said the director Latvian Institute of International Affairs Kārlis Bukovskis in an interview to LTV programme Rīta panorāma.
He explained the situation was unique because European institutions and the European Commission have a specific number of competences in which they have the authority to make decisions.
«Military topics are not among them,» he added.
«People look at us because we are the ones who know Russia. There are cases when we are addressed by countries and representatives who previously may not have know where the Baltic region is even located,» Bukovskis said about the current situation.
The volume of support Latvia provided Ukraine exceeded 1% of GDP last year.
The volume of support Ukraine has received from the EU reaches EUR 50 billion.
On the 24th of February 2022 Russian forces invaded Ukraine. Western countries have imposed severe sanctions on Russia in response.
