Prolonged snowfall and freezing rain expected on Thursday — strong ice formation in some areas

On Thursday, prolonged snowfall is expected in the central and eastern regions, with snow cover increasing by 5–9 cm in some places. Around midnight in the far southeast, snow will turn into freezing rain — causing strong ice formation on roads, power lines, tree branches and other surfaces, according to the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre.

A light wind is expected. At night, the minimum temperature will be –1…–4°C, and along the Kurzeme coast –1…+2°C. During the day, temperatures will rise to –2…+2°C, while along the Kurzeme coast it will be slightly warmer at +2…+5°C.

On Friday, precipitation is expected in some places — mainly rain in the west, and wet snow, snow, or locally freezing rain (ice glaze) in the east. A light to moderate, and along the coast moderately strong, southwest to south wind will blow, with gusts reaching 15–18 m/s on the seacoast. The night will be slightly colder than the previous one, with temperatures dropping to –1…–6°C, and 0…+4°C along the Kurzeme coast. The day will be slightly warmer than the previous one, reaching –1…+3°C inland and +3…+7°C in Kurzeme and along the Vidzeme coast.

On Saturday, precipitation is expected in the western and central regions

— wet snow, snow, and rain along the coast. A light to moderate south to southeast wind will blow. At night, temperatures will fall to +1…–4°C, while temperatures along the coast will remain similar to the day before. During the day, the maximum temperature will range from –1 to +2°C, and +3…+5°C along the seacoast.

At the end of the week, light frost will persist during the night in many places, while daytime temperatures around 0°C will remain mainly in the southeastern part of the country. Compared to the first half of the week, the intensity of precipitation will decrease. At the beginning of next week, temperatures will be similar to those over the weekend, with a slight warming. Light precipitation is expected in almost all regions. By mid-week, precipitation is expected only in the western and central parts of the country.
