Progressives say they are prepared to take charge over any ministry in Latvia

Latvian political party Progressives is prepared to propose candidates to work in any of the ministries from which ministers were called off by the Prime Minister last week, as journalists were told by the party’s co-chairman Andris Šuvajevs on Monday, the 24th of February.

Last week, Latvian Prime Minister Evika Siliņa decided to replace Minister of Transport Kaspars Briškens, Minister of Education and Science Anda Čakša, and Minister of Welfare Uldis Augulis.

Šuvajevs said the party is prepared to take charge over any ministry.

According to Šuvajevs, parties want more clarity and exact numbers about Siliņa’s “government breakthrough plan” and specifically financing for healthcare and increase of benefits.

Once topics related to the government’s tasks have been resolved, then it will be possible to discuss the composition of the Cabinet of Ministers, says the head of the party.

When asked if Progressives are prepared to propose a new Minister of Transport, Šuvajevs said: “We want to vote for everything together: for tasks outlined for 2025 and all three ministers.” The head of Progressives repeated that the party has yet to discuss any specific candidates.

Progressives have invited Siliņa to participate in the party’s faction meeting on Wednesday, the 26th of February, to discuss her vision for the government’s future tasks.

As previously reported, following the announcement of the PM’s government restart plan, Progressives want a discussion about the sectors the party will be in charge of in the future. According to Progressives, the Ministry of Transport should go to New Unity, as this party is also in charge of the Ministry of Finance.
