President: Latvia requires a long-term energy strategy

Latvia requires a long-term energy strategy, stressed Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs during his meeting with Minister of Climate and Energy Kaspars Melnis on Monday, the 19th of February.
During the meeting, the two officials discussed the National Energy and Climate Plan, work on de-synchronisation of Latvia’s grid from BRELL, as well as the development renewable energy resources in Latvia and the ministry’s planned actions in this area, said the president’s advisor Mārtiņš Drēģeris.
The president stressed the need for the country to have a long-term energy strategy. Rinkēvičs said that clear and comprehensible game rules would promote the development of the energy sector. According to the president, this is important both from the perspective of security and competition.
The president initiated the organisation of a discussion at the Riga Castle on the 1st of March. The topic of this discussion will be the development of a long-term development of the energy sector in Latvia. The objective is discussing the strategy of executive institutions, the legislator and other involved sides until the year 2050.
The president also informed the minister about the question he received from Latvian residents, especially during visits to various regions, about the tariffs for electricity and gas users. Rinkēvičs pointed out the importance for the ministry to actively communicate with residents the long-term policy in this field.
The president also told the minister about residents’ questions about wind turbine projects and the need to reach an agreement regarding the compensation amount and distribution between communities and municipalities.
