Peters Raudsepp of the national-conservative party Isamaa was elected Mayor of Tallinn on Monday evening.
Raudsepp received 46 votes in the city council, while 28 deputies voted against him.
He replaces Jevgeni Ossinovski of the Social Democratic Party as mayor.
The 55-year-old Raudsepp has not previously been involved in politics. He joined Isamaa only last week.
Raudsepp graduated from the Faculty of Economics at the University of Tartu, specialising in finance and credit. Since 2023, he has headed the Estonian Institute of Economic Research, which conducts economic studies.
Before that, he led the Enterprise Development Foundation and served as the head of several companies, including the retail company Rautakesko Eesti, the state postal service Eesti Post, and the rapeseed oil producer Werol Tehased.
The coalition agreement signed in early December between Isamaa and the centre-left Centre Party stipulates that for the first two years the mayoral position will be held by a representative nominated by Isamaa who has no prior political experience.
For the following two years, the post will be held by a representative of the Centre Party.
Last week, the city council elected Centre Party leader Mihhail Kõlvart as council chair. Kõlvart previously chaired Tallinn City Council from 2017 to 2019 and served as Mayor of Tallinn from 2019 to 2024.
In the elections held on 19 October, the 79-seat Tallinn City Council elected 37 Centre Party deputies, 17 Social Democrats, 11 Isamaa representatives, eight from the liberal Reform Party, and six from the party Parempoolsed (The Right).
