Polish President Karol Nawrocki has said that US President Donald Trump is the only one who can stop Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, the BBC reports.
In an interview on Radio 4’s Today program, Nawrocki said that Putin cannot be trusted, but Europe must do everything to support Trump in his efforts to end the war in Ukraine. The Polish president, a well-known Trump supporter, now said that at a time when Putin’s Russia threatens both Poland and all of Central and Eastern Europe, the US president is the only one who can “solve the problem.”
Referring to the large-scale Russian drone incursion into Polish airspace last September, Nawrocki called it an extraordinary situation, adding that no NATO country has experienced such a massive drone attack since then. He stressed that Russia is testing Poland’s defense capabilities and NATO unity, and said that Poland has been in a hybrid war with Russia since 2021, and Moscow’s activities in the gray zone show that Poles are living in dangerous times.
Nawrocki was also asked about friendly relations with Trump, who has again openly spoken out about taking over Greenland in any way. These threats have alarmed Europe and pose a threat to NATO, which has existed for 77 years. In response,
the Polish president insisted that, despite the statements of US officials, they are still a guarantor of security in Europe.
What Trump is doing for Europeans deserves support and great respect. Nawrocki said that he can imagine Europe “separating” from the US, but that this would not benefit either economic stability or the military security of the European Union.
However, the uncomfortable question of Greenland remains. Nawrocki said that this was a conversation that Trump and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen should have, and he was confident that the issue could be resolved through dialogue.
However, Nawrocki took the opportunity to criticize European leaders for what he said were unimportant, largely ideological discussions about trivial matters, such as the Green Deal, climate policy, and migration issues, instead of strengthening defense capabilities and security, while Poland currently spends almost 5% of its GDP on defense. However, the Pole had good words for Britain, noting that cooperation between Poland and Britain is particularly important, and that about one million Poles call it home.
