Police in Latvia detain man attempting to damage Ukraine’s flag near government building

Police in Latvia have detained a man, who said he was drunk when he attempted to tear down the flag of Ukraine that is hoisted outside the Cabinet of Ministers building in Riga.
At 18:30 p.m. of 26 March Riga region State Police Department received information of about some man trying to tear down the flag of Ukraine outside the Cabinet of Ministers building, as confirmed by State Police.
Police commenced a criminal procedure in accordance with Part 1 of Section 185 of the Criminal Law – intentional destruction of or damage to property of another. The applicable punishment of this crime is deprivation of liberty for a period of up to two years or temporary deprivation of liberty, or probationary supervision, or community service, or fine.

Police identified the suspect, who was detained in Riga on 31 March. The suspect is a 1991-born man.
When questioned about his motives, the man was unable to explain anything. He only said he was drunk at the time.
The man was given a security measure not associated with deprivation of freedom. The issue of commencing a criminal procedure will be decided in the near future.
