Poland scrambles to bolster security on border with Belarus

Poland has decided to deploy an additional 500 police officers on the border shared with Belarus, as confirmed by the country’s minister of the interior on Twitter.
“Due to the tense situation on the border with Belarus, I have decided to bolster our forces with 500 Polish officers from preventive and counter-terrorism units,” wrote Minister of the Interior of Poland Mariusz Kaminski.

“The police force will joint 5 000 border guards and 2 000 soldiers in securing the border,” he added.

On Monday, the 3rd of July, Polish Border Guard reported that 187 people tried to illegally enter the country from Belarus the day before.
Poland’s Vice-Prime Minister Jarosław Kaczynski announced on Wednesday that Poland will bolster border protection in response to the relocation of Russian PMC Wagner Group to Belarus.
Head of the Polish National Security Office Jacek Severa told Financial Times that he is worried that Wagner forces, now that they are in Belarus, could use migrants from Africa and other countries in which Wagner is active to destabilise the situation in the region.
