Poland is in the process of negotiating the transfer of MiG-29 fighters to Ukraine in exchange for access to Ukrainian-made drone technology, writes Reuters.
Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz informed that after some time Poland will no longer use MiG-29 fighters at all, taking into account that the aircraft are outdated. Negotiations are currently underway to transfer fighters to Ukraine, but in return Poland is expected to transfer certain technologies, such as drones, because
solidarity should work in both directions.
The leadership of the Polish Armed Forces indicated that the transfer of fighters to Ukraine is related to the lack of opportunities to modernize them. In a statement released on the evening of the 9th of December, it was said that this will be part of the allies’ support for Ukraine and in strengthening the borders of NATO’s eastern flank. At present, a final decision has not been made.
The tasks currently performed by the MiG-29 will be taken over by F-16 and FA-50 fighters. The army added that in connection with the transfer of fighters to Ukraine, negotiations are underway to supply certain drones and missile technology to Poland.
