Tuesday, 23 August, marked the start of the demolition of the Monument to the Liberators of Soviet Latvia and Riga from the German Fascist Invaders in Riga.
As previously reported, heavy construction equipment was brought to the fenced off area: track-mounted excavators. A portion of the monument’s frontal area has already been broken down.
Some Latvian residents have started sharing their opinions about the demolition process. Twitter user Elvis Meisters (@ElvisMeisters), for example, wrote: «What a pleasant sight.»

Saeima deputy and National Alliance member Jānis Iesalnieks describes the demolition process as «Latvia’s purification from the filth left by the occupation».

As previously reported, on 16 June Latvia’s parliament passed in the final reading the law that provides for the removal of all objects glorifying the Soviet and Nazi regimes, including the monument in Pārdaugava. The construction company hired to do the job has until 15 November to complete it.
