Latvian diplomat Baiba Braže, who was previously named a perspective candidate to become the next Minister of Foreign Affairs, still has not decided if she wants to join political party Unity, who nominated her for this post.
Braže said she has never been a member of any political party. However, PM Evika Siliņa did ask her “this serious and important question”.
Braže has yet to decide on this.
Siliņa claims Braže was offered the aforementioned post last week. Once the potential minister has worked enough in her post, the PM plans to discuss with her “her political beliefs and activities”.
Normally joining New Unity also means becoming a member of Unity, which is the biggest faction.
As previously reported, after several weeks of political consultations within New Unity, Siliņa decided to propose Latvian diplomat Baiba Braže for the post of Minister of Foreign Affairs.
It is still necessary to collect a sufficient number of votes in the Saeima in her support.
Braže was unofficially mentioned as the most probable candidate after Krišjānis Kariņš announced his decision to step down as Latvian Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Special Assignments Ambassador of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Braže held different posts in the foreign affairs service in the past. She also served as Latvia’s ambassador to multiple countries. Before becoming the special assignments ambassador in summer 2023, she served as NATO Deputy Secretary General for Public Diplomacy.
