US and Ukrainian representatives said that peace talks in Miami over the weekend were productive, but significant results that would allow stopping the war have not been achieved, writes the BBC.
After three days of talks, which also included European allies, US President Donald Trump’s envoy Steve Witkoff and the head of the Ukrainian side of the talks Rustem Umerov issued a joint statement. In it, both indicated that the focus of the meeting was on reaching a common position on issues of multilateral security guarantees guidelines, US security guarantees guidelines, as well as an economic recovery plan.
At the same time, separate talks were held in Miami between US representatives and Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev.
The meetings in the US are the latest wave of diplomatic activity in the talks, which was triggered by the release of the draft peace plan drawn up by the US. The 28-point plan seemed to be leaning in favor of the aggressor Russia, and unpleasantly surprised both Kyiv and the Europeans.
Witkoff reported that Russian representatives in Miami met with both him and other US officials, including Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, who has been assigned to participate in the transformation of the peace plan.
The American called these talks productive and constructive as well,
and added that Russia remains determined to achieve peace in Ukraine.
Trump has been trying to end the war in Ukraine for months, but so far this has not happened, as Moscow and Kyiv cannot reach an agreement on several key issues. Among them is the Russian demand to officially recognize large territories as part of Russia.
Meanwhile, warnings continue to appear in US intelligence reports that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin wants to acquire all of Ukraine and annex parts of Europe that were part of the Soviet Union to Russia. Putin told BBC journalist Steve Rosenberg that there would be no more wars after Ukraine as long as Russia was treated with respect.
