Last weekend, Latvian State Police received information about a two-year-old girl wandering the street in Priekule wearing a diaper and socks, as confirmed by State Police (VP).
VP received a call to a medical institution at 11:30 on Friday, the 21st of February. The report mentioned some little girl that was found wandering the street alone and was promptly taken to a hospital.
Police officers arrived at the hospital, where they met the man who found the child. According to his testimony, he was driving in his car in Priekule. Near some store he noticed a little girl, who was wearing only socks and a diaper. The girl was wandering around and crying the whole time. He wrapped the girl in his coat and went to look for help.
The girl’s mother later arrived at the hospital. She explained that their whole family went for an afternoon nap. During this time, their daughter apparently woke up, opened the unlocked front door of their home and went outside.
The woman only learned that her child is no longer at home from a social worker and the police.
State Police have commenced an administrative violation procedure against the mother for failure to fulfil parental responsibilities. An investigation is underway. Law enforcers have informed social services and the custody court.
Law enforcement officers thanked the resident who immediately took action. The police also continue to urge residents not to be indifferent and report such and similar cases by calling 112.
The police emphasize that one of the most responsible and important tasks of parents is ensuring safety of their children.
