Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, previously the sole opponent of Sweden’s NATO bid, announced on Wednesday, the 24th of January, that he supports and promises the Hungarian Parliament’s approval at the first opportunity. This follows Orban’s invitation to open talks with Sweden on NATO membership bid, which was rejected by the Swedish government, reports Politico.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán expressed his support for Sweden’s NATO membership bid in a meeting with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.
“I reaffirmed that the Hungarian government supports Sweden’s NATO membership,”
Orbán wrote on X, “I also stressed that we will continue to urge the Hungarian National Assembly to vote in favour of Sweden’s accession and to finalise ratification at the earliest possible opportunity.”
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg welcomed Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s clear support for Sweden’s NATO membership, saying it was a good talk with Orbán. Stoltenberg expects ratification to take place when the Hungarian Parliament reconvenes.
BBN already reported that Orbán invited the Swedish Prime Minister for talks on NATO’s bid to build trust. The Hungarian Parliament is expected to reconvene in mid-February.
