Orange warning issued in Latvia due to heavy snowfall

Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre has issued an Orange level warning due to heavy snowfall in Kurzeme.

This evening and the night to Saturday, the 4th of January, it is expected to snow in most of Latvia. In many parts of the country, the layer of snow may increase by 5 cm.

In western parts of Latvia, snowfall is expected to be especially heavy. At times, the layer of snow may increase by more than 10 cm.

The warning will remain effect from 17:00 pm today to 08:00 am tomorrow.

According to the meteorological centre, intense snowing may disrupt road and railway traffic, as well as air traffic. Pedestrians may have a difficult time getting around as well.

Visibility will be very poor during intense snowfall and blizzard. Snowing and wet snow piling on trees may cause branches to break and potentially cause damage to power lines.
