Freezing rain is expected in Latvia in the coming day. This means a layer of ice will form on surfaces overnight, warns Latvian State Environment, Meteorology and Geology Centre.
On the night to Tuesday, the 20th of December, western and central regions of the country will be under yellow level warning.
On the 20th of December, however, orange level warning will be in effect during the day.
After a long period of freezing weather, warmer masses of air will flow to Latvia and a new precipitation zone will approach the country from the west. On the night to Tuesday the precipitation zone will carry snow, wet snow and rain to Latvia. This will cause ice to form on surfaces. Roads and pedestrian walkways will become iced over and slippery. A layer of ice will form on other surfaces as well (such as trees).
Ice on roads will impact vehicle traffic on roads and railway, as well as air traffic. Pedestrians are advised to be careful when walking outside. Residents are urged to plan their trips in advance and accept the fact hey may have to spend more time on the road than usual. Cables and tree branches will ice over as well. This means their weight will increase, creating a risk of them breaking and falling.
Freezing rain is expected on Tuesday and the night to Wednesday. At night on Wednesday ice will form mostly in eastern regions. Residents are advised to follow the situation here: bridinajumi.meteo.lv!
