Official involved in scandalous Latvian army food procurement dismissed

An official of the defence sector involved in the scandalous procurement for logistical services and food for the needs of the Latvian army has been applied with a disciplinary penalty – dismissal, as confirmed by the Ministry of Defence.
The committee found signs of a disciplinary breach in the actions of this official that caused significant damages to state interests.

This official was previously suspended for the duration of the disciplinary investigation.

The name of the official in question is not publicly mentioned, but it was previously reported that the head of the procurement committee, the now former member of the National Alliance Ēriks Ezeriņš and some National Armed Forces (NBS) official were previously dismissed after the scandal. TV3 programme Nekā personīga reported that NBS Provisions Headquarters Procurements and Contracts Office chief Imants Freibergs was dismissed as well.
As it is known, in December 2022 Roja-based Zītari LZ secured rights for EUR 220 million worth contract for the supply of food for the needs of the Latvian army.
According to the contract, this company was to supply NBS with all necessary food reserves. This includes during peace and wartime as previously confirmed by the ministry.
Inspections were commenced over the scandalous procurement. Initial results show there were possible violations. Officials responded to the information surfacing about possible violations and corruption by saying it may be necessary to terminate the contract. Corruption Prevention and Combating Bureau commenced a criminal procedure on the 3rd of March to look into the situation.
