NVA director: economic decline in Latvia isn’t reflected in unemployment indexes yet

The economic decline is not yet reflected in unemployment indexes – the unemployment level in Latvia has dropped to 5.8%, which is the lowest since the start of Covid-19 pandemic, said the director of the State Employment Agency (NVA) Evita Simsone in an interview to LTV programme Rīta panorāma.
She reported that there are currently more than 51 000 unemployed people registered in Latvia. Ukrainian citizens who fled to Latvia contribute a lot to the level of unemployment in the country. They account for 0.2% of all registered unemployed people in Latvia.
Region-wise unemployment is the highest in Latgale and the lowest in Riga. Generally the unemployment level is down in all region, said NVA director.
She also said the agency received 22 notifications regarding collective lay-offs, which will affect more than 1 500 people, but this is still much lower when compared to 2020, for example. Collective lay-off notifications mostly come from industrial, construction, transport and storage sectors.
