New year to start off with freezing weather in Latvia; roads will be slippery

Weather in Latvia in the last days of 2023 will remain similar to previous days – weather will be cloudy with moments of precipitation. On the last day of the year precipitation will appear only in some areas.
On the first week of 2024 air temperature will go down below 0° C, as reported by Latvian State Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre.
At the end of the year, with southern masses of air dominating, warmer masses of air will flow to the country’s territory. Both at night and during the day air temperature in most of the country will stay above 0° C. This means most of the snow will melt. The sky will be cloudy and there will be precipitation – mostly rain, meteorologists say.

Motorists should be careful, because visibility will suffer during precipitation events and the roads will be slippery!

Strong wind will remain along the coast. Wind speed will reach 20 m/sec on Friday, the 29th of December.
On Sunday, the last day of 2023, no significant changes with the weather are expected – it will rain in many parts of the country. The wind will be slow and will blow from the west and south-west. At night and during the day air temperature will be +1° C… -4° C (0° C… +2° C in southern parts of the country). On New Year’s eve colder masses of air will flow to the country. Air temperature will drop to 0° C… -4° C in western parts of Latvia. In eastern parts of the country air temperature will drop as far as -5° C… -11° C. Daytime air temperature will remain similar – only in western parts of the country air temperature will be a couple of degrees warmer.
In the first half of next week it will be overcast. It will also snow in many parts of the country. Strong wind is expected in coastal areas. Air temperature in most of the country will continue going down. In eastern parts of the country air temperature at night will drop as far as -14° C… -19° C.
