Nature park in Tērvete is irreversibly destroyed, admits Latvian minister

On Monday, the 7th of August, the Minister of Environment Protection and Regional Development Māris Sprindžuks visited Dobele and Tērvete to assess the damages personally. The politician said it’s over for the nature park.
The nature park in Tērvete was closed down due to major damages from the thunderstorm last week. According to the management of the nature park, the powerful thunderstorm reached the area yesterday around afternoon.
During the thunderstorm the nature park was hit by strong wind, felling trees and damaging infrastructure, including small gnome houses and wooden sculptures. The extent of damages

is not estimated yet because the park is currently inaccessible.

All of the people that were present in the park, employees included, managed to flee the park, so no one was injured in the thunderstorm. Considering provisional information about the extent of damages, potential visitors to the park are invited to refrain from coming and visit other places.
Head of Recreation of Latvian State Forests Kristaps Didže previously predicted visitors could return to the park on Saturday, the 12th of August.
According to information from mammadava.lv website, the beginning of the nature park in Tērvete goes as far back to 1958, when the first trails were created in then called Saules noskaņu parks. Currently the nature park covers an area more than 1 200 ha large. One third of this area is taken up by the Fairy world.
